
Since 1976, Nadine Gouzée has been working for the Federal Planning Bureau (FPB), where she has coordinated the Task Force on Sustainable Development since 1998. She supervises the elaboration of the Federal Reports on Sustainable Development, which the FPB publishes every two years in accordance with the law of 5 May 1997. Using a transdisciplinary approach, these reports contribute to analyses of the present situation, policy assessments and prospective scenarios. She also piloted the preparation of the first Federal Plan on Sustainable Development. She graduated in economics and econometrics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and also followed additional training in economic, social and environmental ethics.
Her professional career started in 1971 with research on regional development at the Université de Sherbrooke (Quebec), followed by research on econometrics at the ULB. She joined the FPB in 1976 as a researcher for the National Programme for Energy R&D of the Belgian Science Policy Office. Until 1997, she developed expertise in energy accounting, climate change policy, environmental taxation and sustainable development, and plaied an active role in working groups at different levels of governance. At the Belgian level she participated in the Royal Commission on tax harmonisation and simplification, the Central Economic Council, the National Committee on Energy, the Environment Fund of the King Baudouin Foundation and the National Advisory Council on Climate, the Environment and Development. At the international level she participated in the European Economic Policy Committee and the OECD Environmental Policy Committee. At the global level she was a European delegate or lead expert in several UN negotiations (from Rio to Rio+20) on climate change and on indicators and strategies for sustainable development. Between 1995 and 2000, she was vice-chair of the Conseil wallon de l’Environnement pour un Développement durable and in 2003, she was elected vice-chair of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. In addition, she regularly cooperates with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie to capacity building in French-speaking countries.
