Consumer Price Index - Inflation forecasts [08/05/2018]

The inflation forecasts from May 2018 until the end of 2019 produced by the Federal Planning Bureau are based on observations until April 2018 from the FPS Economy. These forecasts take into account futures of 26 April 2018. The oil price should amount to 71 dollar per barrel on average in 2018 and 68 dollar per barrel in 2019. The exchange rate of the euro should be 1.23 dollar per euro on average in 2018 and 1.26 dollar per euro in 2019.

On the basis of these monthly inflation forecasts, average consumer price inflation should be 1.8% in 2018 and 1.5% in 2019, compared to 2.13% in 2017 and 1.97% in 2016. The average growth rate of the so-called 'health price index', which is used for the price indexation of wages, social benefits and house-rent, should be 1.6% in 2018 and 1.5% in 2019, compared to 1.85% in 2017 and 2.09% in 2016.

In May 2017, the pivotal index for the public sector was last exceeded. According to our monthly forecasts for the 'health price index', the pivotal index for public wages and social benefits (currently 105.10) should next be exceeded by the smoothed health index (as defined in the law of 23.04.2015 on employment promotion, Belgian Official Journal of 27.04.2015) in August 2018. As a result, social benefits should be adjusted (by 2%) to the higher cost of living in September 2018 and public wages should follow suit in October 2018. In 2019, the pivotal index (107.20) should not be crossed.

The inflation forecasts are updated the first Tuesday of every month (except for August) taking the latest available information into account. Next update: 5 June 2018.
